RESUMO

Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) administration in patients with cancer and coronavirus disease (COVID-19) remains controversial. Concerns exist that it may worsen COVID-19 outcomes by triggering an inflammatory cytokine storm, despite its common use for managing chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN) or febrile neutropenia post-chemotherapy. Here, we determined whether prophylactic or therapeutic G-CSF administration following chemotherapy exacerbates COVID-19 progression to severe/critical conditions in breast cancer patients with COVID-19. Between December 2022 and February 2023, all 503 enrolled breast cancer patients had concurrent COVID-19 and received G-CSF post-chemotherapy, with most being vaccinated pre-chemotherapy. We prospectively observed COVID-19-related adverse outcomes, conducted association analyses, and subsequently performed Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to validate the causal effect of genetically predicted G-CSF or its associated granulocyte traits on COVID-19 adverse outcomes. Only 0.99% (5/503) of breast cancer patients experienced COVID-19-related hospitalization following prophylactic or therapeutic G-CSF administration after chemotherapy. No mortality or progression to severe/critical COVID-19 occurred after G-CSF administration. Notably, no significant associations were observed between the application, dosage, or response to G-CSF and COVID-19-related hospitalization (all p >.05). Similarly, the MR analyses showed no evidence of causality of genetically predicted G-CSF or related granulocyte traits on COVID-19-related hospitalization or COVID-19 severity (all p >.05). There is insufficient evidence to substantiate the notion that the prophylactic or therapeutic administration of G-CSF after chemotherapy for managing CIN in patients with breast cancer and COVID-19 would worsen COVID-19 outcomes, leading to severe or critical conditions, or even death, especially considering the context of COVID-19 vaccination.

The Uygur medicinal material Mesua ferrea L. has different plant sources in the market. The flower bud of Mammea siamensis T. Anders, which originated from Myanmar and Thailand, is actually used in the dosage room of Uygur hospitals and pharmaceutical enterprises in Xinjiang Region. On the contrary, flowers of Mesua ferrea L. are less frequently used. In this study, the taxonomic characteristics, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used to compare the similarities and differences between the two species. The results showed that the flowers of the two plants were significantly different in morphology, but the similarity of chemical components was high. At the same time, the study also found that Mesua ferrea L. and Mammea siamensis T. Anders contain a large amount of vitexin and isovitexin, which can be used for qualitative and quantitative research. This study provides a reference for the identification, development and utilization of Mesua ferrea L medicinal materials and the revision of quality standards.

ABSTRACT: N-n-butyl haloperidol iodide (F2), a derivative of haloperidol developed by our group, exhibits potent antioxidative properties and confers protection against cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The protective mechanisms by which F2 ameliorates I/R injury remain obscure. The activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a key transcription factor transactivating many antioxidative genes, also attenuates I/R-induced myocardial damage. The present study investigated whether the cardioprotective effect of F2 depends on Nrf2 using a mouse heart I/R model. F2 (0.1, 0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg) or vehicle was intravenously injected to mice 5 min before reperfusion. Systemic administration of 0.4 mg/kg F2 led to a significant reduction in I/R injury, which was accompanied by enhanced activation of Nrf2 signaling. The cardioprotection conferred by F2 was largely abrogated in Nrf2-deficient mice. Importantly, we found F2-induced activation of Nrf2 is SIRT1-dependent, as pharmacologically inhibiting SIRT1 by the specific inhibitor EX527 blocked Nrf2 activation. Moreover, F2-upregulated expression of SIRT1 was also Nrf2-dependent, as Nrf2 deficiency inhibited SIRT1 upregulation. These results indicate that SIRT1-Nrf2 signaling loop activation is indispensable for the protective effect of F2 against myocardial I/R injury, and may provide new insights for the treatment of ischemic heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of bone marrow sparing (BMS) radiotherapy on decreasing the incidence of acute hematologic toxicity (HT) for locoregionally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) patients treated by pelvic irradiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LACC patients were recruited prospectively from May 2021 to May 2022 at a single center and were evenly randomized into the BMS group and the control group. All patients received pelvic irradiation with concurrent cisplatin (40 mg/m2 weekly), followed by brachytherapy and BM V40 < 25% in the BMS group was additionally prescribed. Acute HT was assessed weekly. Binary logistic regression model and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used for predictive value analysis. The trial was registered with Chinese clinical trial registry (ChiCTR2200066485). RESULTS: A total of 242 patients were included in the analysis. Baseline demographic, disease and treatment characteristics were balanced between the two groups. In the intention-to-treat population, BMS was associated with a lower incidence of grade ≥ 2 and grade ≥ 3 acute HT, leukopenia and neutropenia s(72.70% v 90.90%, P < 0.001*; 16.50% vs. 65.30%, P < 0.001*; 66.10% vs. 85.10%, P = 0.001*; 13.20% vs. 54.50%, P < 0.001*; 37.20% vs. 66.10%, P < 0.001*; 10.70% vs. 43.80%, P < 0.001*). BMS also resulted in decreased dose delivered to the organs at risk (OARs) including rectum, bladder and left and right femoral head. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that BM V40 was an independent risk factor for grade ≥ 3 acute HT (odds ratio [OR] = 2.734, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.959-3.815, P < 0.001*). Cutoff value was 25.036% and area under the curve (AUC) was 0.786. The nomogram was constructed, which was rigorously evaluated and internally cross-validated, showing good predictive performance. CONCLUSIONS: Receiving BMS pelvic irradiation could reduce the incidence of acute HT in LACC patients, and BM V40 < 25% may be a significant factor in reducing the risks of acute HT.

In this study, concise, efficient, and modular hydrophosphinylation and hydroamidation of gem-difluorocyclopropenes were disclosed in a mild and transition-metal-free pattern. Through this approach, phosphorus, and nitrogen-containing gem-difluorocyclopropanes were produced in moderate to good yields with excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity. Readily available gem-difluorocyclopropenes and nucleophilic reagents, along with inexpensive inorganic bases, were employed. Multiple synthetic applications, including gram-scale and derivatization reactions and modification of bioactive molecules, were subsequently elaborated.

Redox nanoparticles have been extensively developed for chemotherapy. However, the intracellular oxidative stress induced by constant aberrant glutathione (GSH), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) homeostasis remains the primary cause of evading tumor apoptosis. Herein, an oxidative stress-amplification strategy was designed using a pH-GSH-H2O2-GGT sensitive nano-prodrug for precise synergistic chemotherapy. The disulfide bond- conjugated doxorubicin prodrug (DOX-ss) was constructed as a GSH-scavenger. Then, phenylboronic acid (PBA), DOX-ss and poly (γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) were successively conjugated using chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) to obtain the nano-prodrug PBA-COS-ss-DOX/γ-PGA. The PBA-COS-ss-DOX/γ-PGA prodrug could tightly attach to the polymer chain segment by atom transfer radical polymerization. Simultaneously, the drug interacted relatively weakly with the polymer by encapsulating ionic crosslinkers in DOX@PBA-COS/γ-PGA. The disulfide bond of the DOX-ss prodrug as a GSH-scavenger could be activated using overexpressed GSH to release DOX. Particularly, PBA-COS-ss-DOX/γ-PGA could prevent premature drug leakage and facilitate DOX delivery by GGT-targeting and intracellular H2O2-cleavable linker in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells. Concurrently, the nano-prodrug induced strong oxidative stress and tumor cell apoptosis. Collectively, the pH-GSH-H2O2-GGT responsive nano-prodrug shows potential for synergistic tumor therapy.

Many immune-mediated diseases have the common genetic basis, as an autoimmune disorder, celiac disease (CeD) primarily affects the small intestine, and is caused by the ingestion of gluten in genetically susceptible individuals. As for ulcerative colitis (UC), which most likely involves a complex interplay between some components of the commensal microbiota and other environmental factors in its origin. These two autoimmune diseases share a specific target organ, the bowel. The etiology and immunopathogenesis of both conditions characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation, ulcerative colitis and celiac disease, are not completely understood. Both are complex diseases with genetics and the environmental factors contributing to dysregulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, leading to chronic inflammation and disease. This study is designed to further clarify the relationship between UC and CeD. The GEO database was used to download gene expression profiles for CeD (GSE112102) and UC (GSE75214). The GSEA KEGG pathway analysis revealed that immune-related pathways were significantly associated with both diseases. Further, we screened 187 shared differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of the two diseases. Gene Ontology (GO) and WikiPathways were carried out to perform the biological process and pathway enrichment analysis. Subsequently, based on the DEGs, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) analysis was performed to screen for the diagnostic biomarkers of the diseases. Moreover, single-cell RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) data from five colonic propria with UC showed that REG4 expression was present in Goblet cell, Enteroendocrine cell, and Epithelial. Finally, our work identified REG4 is the shared gene of UC and CeD via external data validation, cellular experiments, and immunohistochemistry. In conclusion, our study elucidated that abnormal immune response could be the common pathogenesis of UC and CeD, and REG4 might be a key potential biomarker and therapeutic target for the comorbidity of these two diseases.

2-(2-Phenylethyl) chromone (PEC) and its derivatives are markers of agarwood formation and are also related to agarwood quality. However, the biosynthetic and regulatory mechanisms of PECs still remain mysterious. Several studies suggested that type III polyketide synthases (PKSs) contribute to PEC biosynthesis in Aquilaria sinensis. Furthermore, systematic studies on the evolution of PKSs in A. sinensis have rarely been reported. Herein, we comprehensively analyzed PKS genes from 12 plant genomes and characterized the AsPKSs in detail. A unique branch contained only AsPKS members was identified through evolutionary analysis, including AsPKS01 that was previously indicated to participate in PEC biosynthesis. AsPKS07 and AsPKS08, two tandem-duplicated genes of AsPKS01 and lacking orthologous genes in evolutionary models, were selected for their transient expression in the leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana. Subsequently, PECs were detected in the extracts of N. benthamiana leaves, suggesting that AsPKS07 and AsPKS08 promote PEC biosynthesis. The interaction between the promoters of AsPKS07, AsPKS08 and five basic leucine zippers (bZIPs) from the S subfamily indicated that their transcripts could be regulated by these transcription factors (TFs) and might further contribute to PECs biosynthesis in A. sinensis. Our findings provide valuable insights into the molecular evolution of the PKS gene family in A. sinensis and serve as a foundation for advancing PEC production through the bioengineering of gene clusters. Ultimately, this contribution is expected to shed light on the mechanism underlying agarwood formation.

Theaflavins are beneficial to human health due to various bioactivities. Biosynthesis of theaflavins using polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is advantageous due to cost effectiveness and environmental friendliness. In this review, studies on the mechanism of theaflavins formation, the procedures to screen and prepare PPOs, optimization of reaction systems and immobilization of PPOs were described. The challenges associated with the mass biosynthesis of theaflavins, such as poor enzyme activity, undesirable subproducts and inclusion bodies of recombinant PPOs were presented. Further strategies to solve these challenges and improve theaflavins production, including enzyme engineering, immobilization enzyme technology, water-immiscible solvent-water biphasic systems and recombinant enzyme technology, were proposed.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the correlation of frailty status with disease characteristics and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and determine the sensitivity and specificity of modified COPD PRO scale (mCOPD-PRO) for detecting frailty. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed 315 inpatients with AECOPD from a tertiary hospital in China from August 2022 to June 2023. Patient frailty and PROs were assessed using the validated FRAIL scale and mCOPD-PRO, respectively. Spearman's ρ was used to assess the relevance of lung disease indicators commonly used in clinical practice, and ordinal logistic regression analyses were used to identify the variables associated with frailty status. The validity of mCOPD-PRO in discriminating frail or non-frail individuals was determined using the receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: The participants (N=302, mean age 72.4±9.1 years) were predominantly males (73.2%). Among them, 43 (14.3%) patients were not frail, whereas 123 (40.7%) and 136 (45.0%) patients were pre-frail and frail, respectively. The FRAIL scale was moderately correlated with the mCOPD-PRO scores (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient [Rs]=0.52, P<0.01) for all dimensions (Rs=0.43-0.49, P<0.01). Patients residing in rural areas (odds ratio [OR], 1.67; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.01-2.76) and with higher mCOPD-PRO scores (OR, 4.78; 95% CI, 2.75-8.32) were more likely to be frail. Physically active patients (OR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.21-0.84) were less likely to be frail. In addition, mCOPD-PRO had good discriminate validity for detecting frailty (area under the curve=0.78), with a sensitivity and specificity of 84.6% and 60.8%, respectively. The optimal probability threshold for mCOPD-PRO was ≥1.52 points. Conclusion: In patients with AECOPD, frailty is closely related to PROs and disease characteristics. Additionally, the mCOPD-PRO score can distinguish well between frail and non-frail patients. Our findings provide support for interventions targeting frail populations with AECOPD.


Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease often have concomitant frailty that may lead to disease deterioration such as acute exacerbations, hospital readmissions, disability, and premature death. Patient-reported outcomes are often used in clinical practice to measure patients' disease characteristics and overall status. Whether patients' frailty state is associated with patient-reported outcomes and if so, which factors are associated with frailty remain unclear. This study, conducted in China, examined their relationship as well as identified factors associated with frailty states. 302 hospitalized patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease completed a questionnaire answering questions about disease severity, frailty state, anxiety, and depression. The findings suggest that people who live in rural areas, self-reported more severe overall conditions, and are physically inactive are more likely to be frail. Patient-reported outcomes can distinguish between frail and non-frail patients. Therefore, patient-reported outcomes can be used to assess the extent of frailty; early screening of AECOPD combined frailty population and implementation of interventions can help mitigate the adverse effects of frailty.

1 Background: In lung cancer, the use of small-molecule inhibitors, chemotherapy and immunotherapy has led to unprecedented survival benefits in selected patients. Considering most patients will experience a relapse within a short period of time due to single drug resistance, combination therapy is also particularly important to improve patient prognosis. Therefore, more robust biomarkers to predict responses to immunotherapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy and rationally drug combination therapies may be helpful in clinical treatment choices. 2 Methods: We defined tumor-specific T cells (TSTs) and their features (TSTGs) by single-cell RNA sequencing. We applied LASSO regression to filter out the most survival-relevant TSTGs to form the Tumor-specific T cell score (TSTS). Immunological characteristics, enriched pathways, and mutation were evaluated in high- and low TSTS groups. 3 Results: We identified six clusters of T cells as TSTs in lung cancer, and four most robust genes from 9 feature genes expressed only on tumor-specific T cells were screened to construct a tumor-specific T cells score (TSTS). TSTS was positively correlated with immune infiltration and angiogenesis and negatively correlated with malignant cell proliferation. Moreover, potential vascular-immune crosstalk in lung cancer provides the theoretical basis for combined anti-angiogenic and immunotherapy. Noticeable, patients in high TSTS had better response to ICB and targeted therapy and patients in the low TSTS group often benefit from chemotherapy. 4 Conclusion: The proposed TSTS is a promising indicator to predict immunotherapy, targeted therapy and chemotherapy responses in lung cancer patients for helping clinical treatment choices.

The diagnosis of cancer is typically based on histopathological sections or biopsies on glass slides. Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches have greatly enhanced our ability to extract quantitative information from digital histopathology images as a rapid growth in oncology data. Gynecological cancers are major diseases affecting women's health worldwide. They are characterized by high mortality and poor prognosis, underscoring the critical importance of early detection, treatment, and identification of prognostic factors. This review highlights the various clinical applications of AI in gynecological cancers using digitized histopathology slides. Particularly, deep learning models have shown promise in accurately diagnosing, classifying histopathological subtypes, and predicting treatment response and prognosis. Furthermore, the integration with transcriptomics, proteomics, and other multi-omics techniques can provide valuable insights into the molecular features of diseases. Despite the considerable potential of AI, substantial challenges remain. Further improvements in data acquisition and model optimization are required, and the exploration of broader clinical applications, such as the biomarker discovery, need to be explored.

Six new dimeric 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromones (1-6) were successfully isolated from the ethanol extract of agarwood of Aquilaria filaria from Philippines under HPLC-MS guidance. Compounds 1-6 are all dimers formed by linking 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone and flindersia 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone via a single ether bond, and the linkage site (C5-O-C8'') of compound 2 is extremely rare. A variety of spectroscopic methods were used to ascertain their structures, including extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis, HRESIMS, and comparison with literature. The in vitro tyrosinase inhibitory and anti-inflammatory activities of each isolate were assessed. Among these compounds, compound 2 had a tyrosinase inhibition effect with an IC50 value of 27.71 ± 2.60 µM, and compound 4 exhibited moderate inhibition of nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells with an IC50 value of 35.40 ± 1.04 µM.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features of Nocardia infections, antibiotic resistance profile, choice of antibiotics and treatment outcome, among others. In addition, the study compared the clinical and microbiological characteristics of nocardiosis in bronchiectasis patients and non-bronchiectasis patients. METHODS: Detailed clinical data were collected from the medical records of 71 non-duplicate nocardiosis patients from 2017 to 2023 at a tertiary hospital in Zhengzhou, China. Nocardia isolates were identified to the species level using MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA PCR sequencing. Clinical data were collected from medical records, and drug susceptibility was determined using the broth microdilution method. RESULTS: Of the 71 cases of nocardiosis, 70 (98.6%) were diagnosed as pulmonary infections with common underlying diseases including bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, diabetes mellitus and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Thirteen different strains were found in 71 isolates, the most common of which were N. farcinica (26.8%) and N. cyriacigeorgica (18.3%). All Nocardia strains were 100% susceptible to both TMP-SMX and linezolid, and different Nocardia species showed different patterns of drug susceptibility in vitro. Pulmonary nocardiosis is prone to comorbidities such as bronchiectasis, diabetes mellitus, COPD, etc., and Nocardia is also frequently accompanied by co-infection of the body with pathogens such as Mycobacterium and Aspergillus spp. Sixty-one patients underwent a detailed treatment regimen, of whom 32 (52.5%) received single or multi-drug therapy based on TMP-SMX. Bronchiectasis was associated with a higher frequency of Nocardia infections, and there were significant differences between the bronchiectasis and non-bronchiectasis groups in terms of age distribution, clinical characteristics, identification of Nocardia species, and antibiotic susceptibility (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study contributes to the understanding of the species diversity of Nocardia isolates in Henan, China, and the clinical characteristics of patients with pulmonary nocardiosis infections. Clinical and microbiologic differences between patients with and without bronchiectasis. These findings will contribute to the early diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Root rot is a very destructive soil-borne disease, which severely affects the quality and yield of Angelica sinensis in major planting areas of Gansu Province, China. Twelve Fusarium strains were identified from root rot tissue and infected soil in the field, by comparing each isolate strain internal transcriptional spacer, translation elongation factor 1-α sequence and RNA polymerase second largest subunit gene (RPB2) with the sequences of known fungal species in the NCBI database. Of these isolates, four were F. acuminatum, followed by three F. solani, two F. oxysporum, and one each of F. equiseti, F. redolens, and F. avenaceum. Under greenhouse conditions, pathogenicity testing experiment was carried out using five strains: two F. acuminatum, one F. solani, one F. oxysporum, and one F. equiseti. Among them, the incidence of F. acuminatum-induced root rot on A. sinensis was 100%; hence, it was the most aggressive. Liquid chromatography was used to show that F. acuminatum was capable of producing neosolaniol (NEO), deoxynivalenol (DON), and T-2 toxins. Of these, the level of NEO produced by F. acuminatum was high, compared with the other two toxins. By isolating Fusarium spp. and characterizing their toxin-producing capacity, this work provides a new information for effectively preventing and controlling A. sinensis root rot in the field, as well as improving the quality of its medicinal materials. RESUMO

Glioblastoma (GBM), the deadliest central nervous system cancer, presents a poor prognosis and scant therapeutic options. Our research spotlights OH2, an oncolytic viral therapy derived from herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), which demonstrates substantial antitumor activity and favorable tolerance in GBM. The extraordinary efficacy of OH2 emanates from its unique mechanisms: it selectively targets tumor cells replication, powerfully induces cytotoxic DNA damage stress, and kindles anti-tumor immune responses. Through single-cell RNA sequencing analysis, we discovered that OH2 not only curtails the proliferation of cancer cells and tumor-associated macrophages (TAM)-M2 but also bolsters the infiltration of macrophages, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Further investigation into molecular characteristics affecting OH2 sensitivity revealed potential influencers such as TTN, HMCN2 or IRS4 mutations, CDKN2A/B deletion and IDO1 amplification. This study marks the first demonstration of an HSV-2 derived OV's effectiveness against GBM. Significantly, these discoveries have driven the initiation of a phase I/II clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05235074). This trial is designed to explore the potential of OH2 as a therapeutic option for patients with recurrent central nervous system tumors following surgical intervention.

Background: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, another large-scale respiratory epidemic has emerged in China, causing significant social impact and disruption. The article is to explore the patients' psychological and behavioral responses to the enhancement of healthcare quality. Methods: Based on the five dimensions of the Self-Regulation Common-Sense Model, we developed an interview outline to explore the process by which patients identify disease symptoms to guide action plans and coping strategies. The researchers used a semi-structured interview format to simultaneously collect data online and offline. This study gathered data from 12 patients with mixed respiratory infections, comprising 58% females and 42% males; the average age was 30.67 years (SD 20.00), with 91.7% infected with two pathogens and 8.3% with three. The data analysis employed the KJ method, themes were inductively analyzed and categorized from semi-structured interview results, which were then organized into a coherent visual and logical pathway. Key results: The study identified 5 themes: (1) Autonomous Actions Prior to Seeking Medical Care; (2) Decision-Making in Seeking Hospital Care; (3) Disease Shock; (4) Public Crisis Response; (5) Information Cocoon. Conclusion: The pandemic of respiratory infectious diseases has not ceased in recent years. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, China is now facing a trend of concurrent epidemics involving multiple respiratory pathogens. This study centers on patients' health behaviors, exploring the potential relationships among various factors that affect these behaviors. The aim is to provide references and grounds for the improvement of healthcare services when such public health events reoccur.

Environmental stress at high altitudes drives the development of distinct adaptive mechanisms in plants. However, studies exploring the genetic adaptive mechanisms of high-altitude plant species are scarce. In the present study, we explored the high-altitude adaptive mechanisms of plants in the Himalayas through whole-genome resequencing. We studied two widespread members of the Himalayan endemic alpine genus Roscoea (Zingiberaceae): R. alpina (a selfing species) and R. purpurea (an outcrossing species). These species are distributed widely in the Himalayas with distinct non-overlapping altitude distributions; R. alpina is distributed at higher elevations, and R. purpurea occurs at lower elevations. Compared to R. purpurea, R. alpina exhibited higher levels of linkage disequilibrium, Tajima's D, and inbreeding coefficient, as well as lower recombination rates and genetic diversity. Approximately 96.3% of the genes in the reference genome underwent significant genetic divergence (FST ≥ 0.25). We reported 58 completely divergent genes (FST = 1), of which only 17 genes were annotated with specific functions. The functions of these genes were primarily related to adapting to the specific characteristics of high-altitude environments. Our findings provide novel insights into how evolutionary innovations promote the adaptation of mountain alpine species to high altitudes and harsh habitats.

In this paper, we focus on the weakly supervised video object detection problem, where each training video is only tagged with object labels, without any bounding box annotations of objects. To effectively train object detectors from such weakly-annotated videos, we propose a Progressive Frame-Proposal Mining (PFPM) framework by exploiting discriminative proposals in a coarse-to-fine manner. First, we design a flexible Multi-Level Selection (MLS) scheme, with explicit guidance of video tags. By selecting object-relevant frames and mining important proposals from these frames, the proposed MLS can effectively reduce frame redundancy as well as improve proposal effectiveness to boost weakly-supervised detectors. Moreover, we develop a novel Holistic-View Refinement (HVR) scheme, which can globally evaluate importance of proposals among frames, and thus correctly refine pseudo ground truth boxes for training video detectors in a self-supervised manner. Finally, we evaluate the proposed PFPM on a large-scale benchmark for video object detection, on ImageNet VID, under the setting of weak annotations. The experimental results demonstrate that our PFPM significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art weakly-supervised detectors.

According to the World Health Organization, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was one of the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2019. The ratio of forced expiratory volume in the first second to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) provides a useful indicator for the diagnosis of COPD. Existing data have demonstrated that cadmium (Cd) exposure is associated with COPD. However, data concerning the incidence and progression of cadmium-induced COPD is inconsistent. To explore the relationship between cadmium exposure and the risk of COPD in humans, through January 12, 2023, we conducted a thorough search of the PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Embase and Scopus databases for relevant material. In this study, a meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between cadmium and COPD. This meta-analysis indicated that exposure to cadmium (per 1 µg/L increase) was associated with reduced FEV1/FVC (% change = -47.54%, 95% CI: -54.99% to -40.09%). Subgroup analysis showed that the combined effect estimates were significantly higher in the COPD patient group (% change = -54.66%, 95% CI: -83.32% to -26.00%) than in the general population (% change = -52.11%, 95%CI: -60.53% to -43.70%). Therefore, we conclude that cadmium exposure is associated with reduced FEV1/FVC, which suggests a risk for COPD.
